Freddie Fishbones? Name our food waste trucks, win great prizes!

We are launching a competition to name our fleet of brand-new food waste recycling trucks – with great prizes up for grabs. 

To deliver our new borough service to collect separate weekly food waste from this autumn, we will have a fleet of 10 new food waste recycling trucks. These will be gracing your neighbourhood, and each will need a name. So, we’re asking you to help give them their own identity. 

All entries will be judged and 10 will be selected to match the trucks, which will be colourfully decorated to look like five items: fish bones, pizza, carrot, watermelon and banana. 

The best overall name will win a prize of £300 worth of cycle-shop or gift experience vouchers, with the runner-up earning a £200 voucher. For any child or student that wins, we’ll also be offering free secure cycle parking for their school. And of course, the winning name will be emblazoned on one of the 10 trucks for a very long time. 

The competition will run for six weeks, until Thursday 13 June. 

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate and Air Quality, said, “I’m very excited to hear some of your names for this new family of food waste recycling trucks. 

“The funnier, the better – I want to hear all of your best puns, I want to hear alliteration, I want something that will make me laugh every time I see the vehicle rolling down my street. There are great prizes up for grabs, so get thinking and get submitting”. 

The new trucks will support the rollout of a separate food waste recycling offer coming to flats over the next few months and kerb-side properties this autumn. Food waste caddies (and compostable bags) will be provided for free by the Council and your food waste will be collected weekly, separate to your garden waste. 

All food items, such as vegetable and fruit peelings, meat and fish bones, eggshells, teabags, leftovers, and out-of-date food, can be added to the separate food waste recycling service. 

Other items, such as food packaging, cooking oil and liquids, should not be placed in the food waste bin.
